A Cane in your Hand that will put a Smile on your Face

I’m known around town as the “cane lady”. You’ll find me with a cane that matches the colors of my outfit or copies a design from a dress. To keep the school spirit, I use a cane with school colors at my sons' sporting events.

At 40 years old I realized that I needed to use a cane. No.....actually, that was when I ACCEPTED that I needed to use a cane. I have dystonia. It’s a rare movement disorder that causes muscles to spasm or contract into distorted postures. It affects my whole right side from my mouth to my toes, causing my foot to turn out or my leg to give out, or force me into bending over in half as if I’m picking up something from the floor.

If I went out with my family or friends, I could use them for support. But I was afraid to walk anywhere alone, because I may not be able to walk back. I knew a cane was the solution to my wanting independence, but I couldn’t bring myself to walking around with a “cane". Just the sound of  it made me wince.

That’s when I decided to walk around with a piece of art instead. More than a walking stick, a custom painted cane became a showpiece. And a conversation piece... I have met so many interesting people by their commenting on my cane.

Make the best out of the situation. I can’t walk around without a cane, but I CAN walk around with pride. I hope you get the same satisfaction from using one of my canes.
